Data Science Bootcamp

Data science is one of the most high-demand skills for any graduate. At Career Semester Abroad, you'll take an intensive bootcamp designed to give you practical skills that you can apply to almost any career field you may go into. You'll learn from industry experts who care about you as an individual. Get a taste of the curriculum and teaching staff below.

Coding in Python and SQL
The industry-standard language for analyzing, building models, and presenting data.
Data Science Fundamentals
The pipeline from raw data to models in production. Version control and collaborative work.
Data Analysis
Data cleaning, manipulation, visualization, and analysis.
Statistics Foundations
Likelihood, probability distributions, hypothesis testing, and more.
Big Data
Tools and techniques for analyzing massive data sets.
Machine Learning
Supervised and unsupervised learning, regression, and decision trees.
Connor Lawless
Former AI Scientist at RBC Capital Markets, PhD from Cornell

The technical barriers to doing data science are becoming smaller and smaller every year. You no longer need access to a supercomputer and a graduate degree in computer science. What’s really going to distinguish all college graduates over the next 10 years is their ability to communicate effectively, understand data in their respective field, and affect change through analysis.

Internship in Madrid

The internship portion of this program is integrated with the data science bootcamp. While you continue learning in the bootcamp and take your classes at Universidad Nebrija, you'll be matched with a company in Madrid for a data-related internship. This will allow you to gain real-world experience you can add to your resume, while also learning how to work for an international company. But interships at Career Semester aren't like your typical internship: expect continous support and collaboration with your fellow students.

Integrated with your data science bootcamp course.

Our internships don't require prior experience. That's because what you learn in the data science class will connect directly with your internship project, so you'll be applying your new skills to create value.

Highly collaborative.

You'll be working closely with other talented students to complete the deliverables for your project. By the end, you'll be a professional at using online and offline tools to communicate, collaborate, and create.

Continuously supported.

You'll meet frequently with your manager for check-ins, alignment, and feedback about your work. Your teaching team will be available throughout to support you with both subject matter and relationship management.

Academics @ Universidad Nebrija

You'll choose two courses from this list to take on campus.

Credit information

Earn a total of 12-14 credits from two different institutions.

Career Semester is partnered with The Universidad Antonio de Nebrija’s main campus, Madrid-Princesa. The university is conveniently located in the heart of the city along Line 3 of the Madrid metro. Career Semester students at Nebrija will be able to take courses in English and Spanish with other international students. Both international and local Spanish students share the same academic buildings and have access to libraries, computer labs, and cafeterias on campus. Universidad Antonio de Nebrija is fully accredited and recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia).

Career Semester has partnered with Carroll College in Helena, Montana, to offer a U.S. transcript for all its data science course + internship programs. This experiential learning course provides academic content and guided career and professional development for undergraduate students in a real-world, professional context. It is designed for students to gain experience in a workplace setting while engaging with relevant, focused academic course content. Students enrolling in Career Semester Abroad will earn 6 credits from Carroll College.

A global student community

Career Semester brings together students and teachers from around the world. Here's what past students had to say about the program.
Andrew Rasetti
Duke University

If you are looking to push yourself and develop your professional skills in an applied setting, then Career Semester could be a great fit for you. The format of the program was really effective, as it allowed me to ground my knowledge in theory and then test myself in an applied setting. It feels amazing to know that the work I have done has made a real difference for the company I am working with.

Gabriela Silguero
Rutgers University

Career Semester is like nothing I have ever experienced before. You not only learn lifelong skills, but you connect and interact with students and teachers that will give you insight to more than just what you are learning in the classroom. If you want to try something unique and out of your comfort zone, this program is a great way to do so.

Donald Cooper
University of Virginia

If I could describe Career Semester in one word, it would be this: Empowering. The experience you will take away from your coursework and your internship is really unlike any college course or internship I've had before. Not only will you learn relevant industry techniques that will help you standout in the job market, but you also have entire network and community of support helping you be the best version of yourself. By the end of the program, you feel accomplished, competitive, and hungry for more.

Jordan DeCade
Luther College

Absolutely amazing. I have learned more and felt more opportunity in these past weeks than I have in many years. At Career Semester, I am constantly applying what I'm learning to real things that matter to me.

Feel at home immediately.

Living in Career Semester housing will give you the opportunity to experience aspects of the Spanish lifestyle that are inaccessible to the average visitor. Uncovering the uniqueness of your neighborhood and the surrounding areas will help you to feel right at home. No matter which type of housing you choose, you will commute to class as most Madrileños do, via metro. Travel times to the various university buildings generally range between 30 and 60 minutes depending on housing and class locations.

* We strive to match your housing preferences with our available accommodations, however, housing preference requests cannot be guaranteed.

Option 1: Homestay
Homestays are best if you are seeking full linguistic and cultural immersion during your time abroad. Each host family has been carefully selected by Career Semester's resident staff in order to best accommodate your needs and to ensure a comfortable living situation. Homestays will provide two meals a day (except on Career Semester excursion days) and laundry service, including a change of sheets and towel, once a week. You will typically share a room with another Career Semester student of the same gender. Single rooms may be available for an additional fee.
Option 2: Student Residence
The student residence (residencia in Spanish) is best if you would like to be independent while living in a more student-centered environment. These single-student residencia rooms include their own bathroom and have limited availability. They are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. The residencia houses international and local students and has shared kitchens and lounges. Meals and laundry service are not included, but students have access to kitchens, and washer/dryer facilities are available for an additional cost.
Option 3: Apartment
Apartments are a great housing option if you are seeking a greater degree of independence during your time abroad. Apartments are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and availability is limited. Rent and utilities are included in the program price, and each apartment is fully furnished. The apartments are located throughout the city of Madrid, rather than all in one building. All apartments are either within walking distance or conveniently located near public transit routes relative to the university. Apartments typically house three to four Career Semester students, with single or double bedrooms and shared common spaces. Meals and laundry service are not included.

Immerse into Madrid, Spain

As the capital and geographic center of Spain, Madrid is a lively city with intense cultural, artistic, and intellectual activity. As a student here, you will be captivated by Madrid's impressive universities, royal palaces, pristine parks, and world-famous art museums. From areas filled with modern high-rise apartments and bustling commercial zones, to traditional landscapes with picturesque neighborhoods and quaint cafes, the city is a unique combination of old and new. Madrid's diverse population, world-renowned art and architecture, and dynamic nightlife make it the dream location for studying abroad.
The program includes cultural events and excursions, and makes certain optional excursions available on request. Below is a sample of what you'll experience!
El Escorial and Salamanca

Just 2 hours from Madrid, Salamanca has a history dating back to the Celtic era and is known for its ornate sandstone architecture. You will walk the quaint cobblestone streets of Salamanca to learn about the history of this world-renowned university town. En route to Salamanca, you will stop to explore El Escorial, the 16th-century monastery that includes an ornamented church, an expansive library, and a royal mausoleum.

During the on-site orientation, you will visit Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trip will begin with a panoramic bus tour of Toledo's unique hilltop and will continue on to the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes, Santa María la Blanca synagogue, Santo Tomé Church, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria.

Granada is a picturesque and mountainous university town. It has always been a multicultural city and was the last Moorish stronghold during the Catholic reconquest of Spain. You will learn about Granada’s multicultural past through visits to historic neighborhoods like the Albaicín and Realejo. During an unforgettable evening flamenco show, you will have the chance to soak up Spanish music and culture. You will also visit important cultural sites including the Alhambra fortress, Spain’s most popular tourist attraction.

This multi-day, optional excursion takes you across Morocco, one of the most colorful and diverse countries in the world. It encompasses direct cultural encounters with locals, guided tours through the medina, and opportunities to learn the ins and outs of haggling with Moroccan vendors. You will have unforgettable experiences in the Sahara desert riding camels and waking up to see the spectacular views of the sunrise. Additional cost applies.

Cultural Activities in Madrid

Our on-site team encourages you to explore the city and culture of Madrid. The team facilitates this by offering a robust calendar of events that showcases what makes Madrid special. These activities vary each term, and previous offerings have included cooking classes, museum visits (Reina Sofia and el Prado), tours of the Royal Palace and activities in Retiro Park.
